"Rømmegrøt" - Sour cream porridge
"Rømmegrøt" is genuine Norwegian food tradition and considered the National dish in Norway, with long standing traditions also here in the Valdres region. Since it is cooked with real sour cream it is not an every day dish. Rømmegrøt is consideres a dish for festive occasions and follows people from the region from the crib to the grave. It is served at christenings, confirmations, weddings and funerals. Earlier, it also was tradition to serve rømmegrøt when the hay harvest was finished and at midsummer, called St. Hans in Norway.
Sides
Rømmegrøt is served with sugar and cinnamon and a dash of butter or fat from the cooking process. Traditional sides are "kurv", cured lamb and crispbread. Some local varieties include sides as raisins, "rakfisk", smoked trout or boiled eggs.
