Meat from domesticated reindeer that roam natural grazing grounds in the mountains in Jotunheimen and Filefjell is a national food treasure. Rein fra Jotunheimen was awarded a protected geographical indication through the Norwegian Food Foundation in 2021 as the first reindeer husbandry organization in the country. This certification scheme puts our reindeer meat on the same level as i.e. France's champagne and roquefort cheese, Italy's prosciutto di Parma and our own rakfisk and kurv.
In Jotunheimen people have herded reindeer since the 1400s and most likely even longer. The gazing grounds around Jotunheimen with their rich vegetation of montane flora, heather and lichens are ideal for reindeer and produce high-quality meat with a milde game taste.
In order to take advantage of the grazing conditions in a best possible way, reindeer from Jotunheimen are herded. Theiy move between the different grazing areas by themselves. Motorized transport of the animals between the different areas is not allowed, nor is the use of animal feed, additional feed or artificial additives.
Knowledge and quality
Through the husbandries' extensive knowledge the herds thrive, are kept healthy and deliver meat of supreme quality. There is systematic breeding, registration and maintainance of the herds through employed herders. A minimum of 50 percent of the animals taken out for slaughter must be calves in order to keep a sustainable herd size and to avoid overgrazing.
Today there are four reindeer husbandries in the area: Filefjell reinlag, Fram reinlag, Vågå tamreinlag and Lom tamreinlag
You can buy Rein fra Jotunheimen under the label Kolonihagen from the Rema 1000 supermarkeds, in selected delicacy stores and enjoy it in selected restaurants.
