Bygdin Høifieldshotel
About
The traditional Bygdin Høifieldshotel is run by the Oxhovd/Svalesen family. The family's dream is to maintain the hotel's traditions, its very own charm and hospitality. Located directly at the foot of the Jotunheimen mountain range, you can enjoy nature all around you. Everyone is welcome, whether you wear hiking boots, ski shoes or high heels. We can arrange weddings, celebrations and company events.
Summer
Right outside our doorstep is the starting point of several hiking routes of various length and difficulty as well as trails leading into Jotunheimen, connecting the hotel with the mountains cabins Torfinnsbu and Yksendalsbu. The hotel makes a perfect base for a number of 2000-meter-summits in the "Gjende-Alps", as the part of Jotunheimen between the Lakes Bygdin and Gjende is called. The boat from Bydin to Torfinnsbu and Eidsbugarden runs several times a day. The most popular hikes around Bygdin are Synshorn, Bitihorn, Besseggen and Svartdalen.
The hotel is located right along the Mjølkevegen cycling route that connects the Gudbrandsdalen, Valdres and Hallingdal regions, and is a Mjølkevegen accommodation.
Winter
During winter, the hotel is connected to the extensive cross country trail network of Beitostølen by several groomed trails. From mid-February to Easter, marked back-country skiing routes lead into Jotunheimen to Torfinnsbu, Yksendalsbu and over the high mountain plateau Valdresflye to Gjendesheim. Early and late in the season, when the road is open, Valdresflye usually has the first and last cross-country skiing trails in the country on natural snow. In mid-winter, the road up there is closed.
How to find us
Bygdin Høifieldshotel is located along road 51, the National Tourist Route Valdresflye, at the entrance of the Jotunheimen National Park. Distances are approx. 12 km to Beitostølen and 80 km to Vågå. The bus route Valdresekspressen has five daily departures from Oslo during high season in the summer. You can also pre-book transportation from Beitostølen to Bygdin during the winter season.
History
The hotel opened under the name Jotunheimen Turisthotell already in 1897. In the 1920s, the name was changed to Bygdin Høifjeldshotel. In the ladies's and men's lounges we've kept parts of the original interior from the 1930s. 1925 the hotel was modernized and has since then undergone several extensions. The historical rooms are still kept in the original style, with a sink in the room, bathrobe and slippers in the wardrobe and shared facilities in the hallway, while the rooms from the 1960s have on-suite bathrooms.
We look forward to welcoming you the the mountains - the real mountains!
